Wow, I can’t believe it’s been a month since I’ve last updated! I’m really sorry about that..life got ridiculously busy there for a while. Work was ramping up, then we went to Hawaii for our 5 year anniversary, and then we came back and work was even worse!
So…how have things been? Well, I can say that I am firmly entrenched in my vegetarian diet now. It’s been six weeks since I’ve started this journey, and I am feeling better every day (minus the overwhelming jet lag from our trip…now that is killing me)! I have slipped up a few times, but not because I was seriously craving meat, more because there was literally NO other option available. Each time, I felt horrible after (not emotionally, but physically). I’m not sure if it was the grease associated with the meat, or if it was digestion issues. I’m guessing more the grease, because I really can’t see how my body would forget how to digest meat in such a short amount of time.
We went to Hawaii for our vacation, and it was super easy there. The place is absolutely gorgeous (we were on Oahu for a few days, then on the Big Island for the rest of the time) and it really is paradise. Unfortunately, it did rain a lot, and there were some disappointments with things here and there, but overall it was so nice to be able to get away and relax with my husband. He really is my best friend and we have such a great time together!
The food…oh my! I have discovered some AMAZING things out there! Let me list them for you:
#1 – Acai bowls. O.M.G. Amazing!!! They blend the acai with frozen blueberries and strawberries, making this sorbet consistency deliciousness. Then, they top it with fresh bananas, strawberries, blueberries and homemade granola. And, a drizzle of honey! It was seriously divine! I have to go find me some acai now, and make them at home, because they were super easy to make and absolutely delicious!
#2 – Ramen. No, not that crap that you buy dried in a package, 10 for $1, at the grocery store (though, I won’t lie, I do like that too…when desperate). I’m talking about traditional, Japanese ramen (that originated from China, but whatever). Hand cut noodles, delicate broths, crisp vegetables lightly simmered…heaven. In a bowl. We had some of the best ramen in Oahu…miso broth with veggies. And those noodles…omg, the noodles! To die for. I’d fly back there just for that.
#3 – Poke. Not like you poke someone, but pronounced “po-kay”. Basically raw fish, doused with some delicious sauce (I prefer regular soy, but you can get a variety) and little else. It’s considered an appetizer in Hawaii, but I’d eat it as a meal, with a scoop or two of steamed white rice. Yes…I’m one of those vegetarians that still eat fish occasionally…I consider them “vegetables of the sea.” Regardless…it’s usually fresh ahi tuna…raw. Super delicate flavor, and the soy sauce (I also tried a spicy sauce of some sort that was also delicious) really complemented the flavor of the fish. Awesome all around…and I could probably find it here (or make it myself) if I could get my hands on some decent fillet of fish. We’ll see…
#4 – Pineapple. Yes…it’s everywhere, and you can get it everywhere, but somehow it just tastes better in Hawaii. Not really sure why. Maybe it’s because it’s accompanied by gorgeous sunsets and gentle breezes, or maybe it’s because they grill the shit out of it and coat it with this AMAZING sugar cinnamon mixture that carmelizes and crunches in your mouth, like a mini party for your taste buds! Yeah…screw the sunsets, I think it’s the sugar. But seriously…there is nothing like fresh pineapple for any time of the day. Great on greek yoghurt with some granola, awesome as a side to a sandwich for lunch, and fantastic as a dessert, grilled like I mentioned above. I’m pretty sure I have zero stomach lining left after I came home, because I ate so much pineapple while there (and it’s acidic, so if you have stomach acid problems, you might want to go easy).
#5 – Macadamia Nut ANYTHING. Hawaii is one of the largest producers of these nutty little gems, and good god, they will put them into anything! Macadamia nut coffee, chocolate covered macadamia nuts, macadamia nut encrusted fish, macadamia nut cake, etc. But, my favorite, BY FAR, is the Macadamia Nut pancakes topped with a dash of powdered sugar. And then…for the creme de la creme…COCONUT SYRUP! I had a stack of these babies while on Oahu, and it was love at first bite. Fluffy pancakes with chopped macadamia nuts inside, then topped with some more…and that light coating of powdered sugar. Oh! Tears! And if that wasn’t enough (and trust me, it was), they brought out this amazingly sugary, coconutty, syrup that you poured right over to truly make this one of the most awe-inspiring moments of my life. Yeah…I am practically in tears thinking about how good these things were. In fact…I’m going to get on Amazon right now to source me a bottle of that syrup, so I can make my own, because they were THAT good. You should do the same. Right now.
So, there you have it! My trip to Hawaii, in food terms, and more thoughts on my journey as a vegetarian! I’m thinking that this blog will start to go the way of a more lifestyle blog…since I can’t talk vegetarian 100% of the time (and I’m so much more than that anyways…and who wouldn’t want to full “me” experience?!).
